Announcements

The Asian American Journalism Association is kick starting an internship that will have a student write for the Nguoi Viet, the oldest and largest (+50 staff) Vietnamese newspaper in California, AND the Orange County Register.

The goal is to introduce students to ethnic media and have them carry that knowledge to a mainstream newspaper.

Applications will be accepted until Nov. 4.

Can you please send over to any student contacts. This is a PAID internship ($3,000). It's a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and report on Orange County's vibrant Vietnamese population, one of the largest populations of Vietnamese refugees in the US. Students do not need to be Asian to apply, but they do need to register as an AAJA members if selected.

I hope you're doing well!

Thank you!

The AAJA-LA “Diversity in Print Media” Fellowship is a five-month program that will allow a student reporter to explore, learn, and report in English on Orange County’s culturally rich, immigrant Vietnamese community.

The Chapter is looking for a graduate or undergraduate student with solid-reporting skills, a comfort with asking a lot of questions, and an interest in learning about the Vietnamese culture to write for the English section of the Nguoi Viet, the largest and oldest US Vietnamese publication, and the Orange County Register.

For the Orange County Register, the student will write two articles on the Vietnamese community.

For many, the Vietnam War defines perception of the Vietnamese community, but the stereotype prevents greater understanding about a OC bastion blossoming with business and commerce opportunities via first-time immigrant entrepreneurs, parents and children working through generational differences, and a community of immigrants grappling with assimilation into a country far different from the one they immigrated from.

There are close to a quarter of a million Vietnamese residents in Westminster-Garden Grove-Little Saigon area, one of the largest Vietnamese resettlement communities in the United States.

ELIGIBILITY:
College and graduate print journalism students only
OC-area residents only

PROGRAM POINTS:
