Sacramento Press Club 2010 Journalism Scholarships
Awarding $17,500 to students

Since 1974, the Sacramento Press Club has offered scholarships to students who are preparing for a journalism career. For 2010/11, we are offering five scholarships, and they continue to be among the largest journalism awards in Northern California.

We will select one student for each of the following scholarships:

$6,000 in honor of the late Earl "Squire" Behrens, a former political editor of the San Francisco Chronicle who covered the state Capitol for a half-century.

$4,000 in honor of Jean Stephens, the long-time Secretary-Treasurer of the Sacramento Press Club and a retired Sacramento City College journalism instructor who helped thousands of journalism students become professional journalists over a 30-year career.

$2,500 in honor of the late Jerry Gillam, a 35-year veteran of the Capitol press corps. He is remembered for his knowledgeable political reporting in the Los Angeles Times' Sacramento bureau, his friendly mentoring of new Capitol reporters and his larger-than-life sense of humor.

$2,500 in honor of Barbara O'Connor, Ph.D., Professor of Communications at CSUS. She is a nationally recognized expert in the fields of political communication and telecommunications policy and applications. Newsweek named her one of "Fifty for the Future" for her impact on telecommunications policy. In more than three decades of teaching, she has sparked a passion for political journalism in countless students, and helped many other young people through her work on numerous boards.

$2,500 in honor of the late Bill Stall, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer for the Los Angeles Times. In his nearly 50 year journalism career, Stall focused his reporting on government and politics, natural resources and the environment. He also passed on his expertise to students while teaching classes at USC. In the words of one friend and colleague, he is fondly remembered as "civil and courteous in a tense world of deadlines."

ELIGIBILITY:
1. Applicants must be college students who will be juniors, seniors or graduate students in the 2010/11 academic year.

2. Applicants must also have a connection to the Sacramento region. There are three ways to meet this criteria. Applicants only need to meet ONE of the following categories in order to qualify:

a. Students from the Sacramento region

b. Students enrolled in a Sacramento region college or university in the 2010/11 academic
year
c. Students who can show a demonstrated interest in covering news in the Sacramento region

WHAT WE NEED:
Two copies of the following, organized into two separate packets. Please use paper clips instead of staples, as we will be making numerous photocopies of your application for the panel of judges if you are chosen as a finalist.

1. A letter of approximately 400 words explaining how you will pursue a journalism career and why. We would like to know what you have already done to prepare for your career, any related experience outside the classroom, and your motivation for a career in journalism. The letter should also explain the financial need for the scholarship
and how you meet the eligibility requirements.

2. Your current official transcript documenting the classes you have taken and your grades.
You only need to pay for one official transcript -- you may open it and make one copy. Please send us both the original and the copy, placing the original in one packet and the copy in the other.

3. Clips, photographs, tapes or other samples of work. Limited to five examples and must fit on 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheets of paper, with no overlaps, for ease of photocopying. Please do not photocopy both sides of the papers. On-line journalists should submit the Internet address for their publication. You may submit work on DVD or CD (a copy for each packet) but it's much easier for us if you can post your work on-line and include a link. Additional examples of your work can be brought to the interview if you are selected as a finalist.

4. Your email address and a phone number where we can reach you on short notice and during normal business hours.

5. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, academic advisor or supervisor.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:
Career promise, academic record, journalistic achievement and economic need.

DEADLINE:
Entries must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

TIMELINE:
Ten finalists will be chosen from the pool of applicants.
Interviews with the finalists will be scheduled for mid-to-late April with a panel of judges selected from the members of the Sacramento Press Club. We can conduct interviews with finalists via speakerphone if you do not currently reside in the
Sacramento region.
Scholarships will be awarded in May, and it's our hope (but not required) that the recipients will join us as our guests at the monthly Sacramento Press Club meeting.

ENTRIES SHOULD BE MAILED TO:
Sacramento Press Club, 1000 Sagamore Way, Sacramento, CA 95822

IRVINE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INTERNSHIP

Hi Prof. Clanin,

Hope you’re doing well. Congratulations on the Daily Titan’s 50th anniversary!

I’m not sure if you remember me, but I was on the Daily Titan staff during spring 2007 and graduated summer 2007. Anyway, I’m currently the Director of Communications at the Irvine Chamber of Commerce and looking for an intern to help out in the communications department. I am hoping that you might know of a few students who may be interested in an internship (for school credit). This position will offer many opportunities to actually write and design newspapers, e-newsletters and even press releases. In addition, the Chamber is placing a lot of emphasis on social media and we’re looking for an intern who has a interest in learning more about Twitter, Facebook (from a professional standpoint), and other social media outlets.

Below, you will find the job description as well as the desired qualifications.

The Irvine Chamber of Commerce represents approximately 1,000 local companies and is a premier business member organization dedicated to serving as advocates for pertinent issues affecting the local business community, while serving as a vehicle to promote business and community development in Irvine.

The communications intern is expected to assist the Director of Communications by:
- Contributing content and proofing the Chamber’s award-winning publications, including a weekly e-newsletter and a monthly newspaper
- Creating fliers, brochures and marketing materials for the Chamber programs and events
- Gathering information and creating compelling press releases for various events and developments at the Chamber
- Developing the Chamber brand via social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter
In addition, the communications intern is expected to assist with various administrative tasks, such as filing and photocopying, as needed. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend various Chamber events, such as networking functions and professional development seminars.

Skills Required:
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
English or Communications major preferred, but not required.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to multi-task.
Microsoft Office proficiency.
Proofreading/editing experience and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite a plus.

The Irvine Chamber’s communications internship is an unpaid internship for college credit.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it.

Regards,
Florance
