When I first came to teaching
from newspapering, I assumed that the best and most successful journalism
student would be the smartest.
It didn't take many years to learn that, while
smarts was important, it wasn't at the top of the list.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is the
kind of personal courage it takes to recognize and accept the occurrence
of events and the existence of forces that run contrary to your own
views. Jon
