Online class for November 12, 2009
This is an extra credit assignment. It is not
required, but it will help you learn about correlations. If you complete the
assignment, it will be worth up to 3 extra points on the next exam.
First, click on the "Correlation links" page and try out
some of the exercises. Before long, you should be able to see a
scatterplot and "guesstimate" the direction and degree of a correlation.
Second, provide three original examples of
bivariate correlations representing any three of the following:
 |
a positive linear
correlation
|
 |
a negative linear
correlation
|
 |
a curvilinear correlation
(u-shaped, inverted-U, nonmonotonic, etc.)
|
 |
no correlation
|
For each correlation, identify the
independent variable (X axis, the dependent variable (Y axis), and create
a hypothetical scatterplot to illustrate the correlation. This doesn't have to
be a work of art.
The assignment is due on November 17.
