Arguments to be Toulminized

 

E= xtra Credit (3 points maximum): Identify the claim, the grounds, and the most likely warrant in each of the following arguments.  Identify the qualifier if there = is one.  For each claim, state th= e type of claim as well (fact, judgment, policy, or definition).

 

1. You had better wear some sun block, or you m= ay get skin cancer.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Dodgeball has ve= ry little value as a form of exercise in schools, because once a child is hit = by the ball, she or he sits out for the rest of the game.

 

 

 

 

 

3. Many kids are already overweight and parents can’t supervise their children while they are at school. Hence, vendi= ng machines at elementary schools should not sell sugary snacks or fatty foods. 

 

 

 

 

 

4. I would strongly advise against eating raw oysters.  Last year in the United States, fifty people died of intestinal illnesses caused by bacteria contained in r= aw, uncooked, oysters.

 

 

 

 

 

5. Any parent who owns a pit bull and has small children is irresponsible.  Do= gs that are bred to fight and kill cannot be trusted around children.

 

 

 

 

6. California should legalize prostitution, because tax revenue from prostitution would in all likelihood help reduce the state’s deficit.

 

 

 

 

 

7.  The United State should probably retain the option of “water-boardingR= 21; in special cases such as a “ticking time bomb” scenario.  Torture should never be the first option, but neither should it be ruled out altogether.

 

 

 

 

 

8. Since Gen Y consumers spend more time using social media, like MySpace and Facebook, advertisers and marketers are increasingly turning to new media to reach younger consumers.
