HCOM 102, Dr. Page                        Assignment #2:  Written Statement

 

Two class periods prior to speaking, you will submit a paper explaining how you have addressed each of the following items.  Your paper should be organized according to the bolded subtopics.  The paper should be typed (double-spaced) and free from errors (see Gig List, on web).

  

Topic                          Identify your topic

 

Audience.                   Specify your audience and your assumptions about its values 

                                    (your audience may be real or hypothetical).  Explain how do you plan 

                                    to adapt to your audience?

 

Specific Purpose.       State the specific purpose of your speech.

 

Thesis Statement.     Indicate your thesis statement (i.e., articulate your insight). 

                                   Note: Thesis statements for insight speeches usually contain a number.

 

Introduction.              State your thesis and demonstrate use of at least one other

                                    principle for building an introduction.

 

Transitions.                Discuss your planned use of transitions:

Between introduction and body; between main points in the body and

                                                between the body and the conclusion.

 

Body.                          Identify your structural pattern (topical, chronological, etc)

                                    Indicate at least three main points in support of your thesis

                                        Plan to use 1st order support material at least once (do not include)

    Plan to use 2nd order support material at least once (do not include)

     

3rd Order Info.          Provide two pieces of 3rd order information (with citations) that you

                                    will be using in your speech.

 

Visual Aids.               Use at least two visual aids (one 2-D and one 3-D).  

                                    Describe type, size and content of each.

 

Conclusion.                Plan to use of at least two principles of conclusion building (Note: insert 

                                    conclusion in the paper).

 

Delivery.                    The body must be delivered extemporaneously (you may 

                                    use notes). You may read your introduction and conclusion.  Do not read

                                    the body of the speech!
