CRITERIA
FOR EVALUATING SPEECHES
An Average speech (Grade of C) should:
·
conform
to the assignment (inform, persuade, etc)
·
be
prepared on the assigned date
·
conform
to the time limit
·
fulfill
the unique requirements of the assignment (outline, written statement, visual
aids, etc.)
·
have
a clear thesis statement (central idea)
·
have
an identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion
·
show
reasonable directness and competency in delivery
·
be
free of serious errors in grammar, pronunciation, and word usage.
[Note: The below Average speech (grade D or F) is
seriously deficient in the above requirements]
An Above Average speech (Grade of B)
should:
·
deal
with a challenging topic
·
fulfill
several functions of a speech introduction and conclusion
·
display
clear organization of main points and supporting materials
·
support
main points with timely, accurate and relevant evidence
·
exhibit
effective use of transitions
·
be
presented skillfully enough so that delivery does not distract attention from
the message
A Superior speech (Grade of A) should:
·
constitute
a genuine contribution by the speaker to the knowledge or beliefs of the
audience.
·
sustain
positive interest, feeling, and/or commitment among the audience
·
demonstrate
careful selection of language to secure impact
·
be
delivered in a fluent, polished manner that strengthens the impact of the
message
