Assignment 6: PhotoShop 1

This is a two-part assignment:

In Part A I want to make sure you can perform some basic operations in PhotoShop so that you can put your pictures on the World Wide Web. You will make some basic picture manipulations, reduce a picture's memory, change the mode of a picture, and save the image in another format.

In Part B you will learn how to use multiple software programs to create text and image combinations that will be a part of your online portfolio. Specifically you will learn how to work with thumbnail sketches for design purposes, use the level control, and combine words and pictures in PhotoShop.

PART A (Step-by-step guides are based on the Macs in H-312)

1. Open the image "Giraffe.psd" in the Lesson11 folder in PhotoShop's 5.0 folder.
2. From Image, select Adjust, then Color balance. Reduce the amount of yellow
3. Select the crop tool. Make an appropriately cropped picture.
4. From Filter, select sharpen, then sharpen edges
5. What is the picture's current memory size? _______
6. From File, select Save as. Name the file "giraffe.jpg" (without the quote marks). Make sure the image is in the JPEG format (medium resolution)
7. Adjust the resolution until the memory of the picture is <50k but donšt go below 72dpi. (NOTE: You will need to check the size of the image saved on your disk).
8. Print a black and white version of the picture
9. What is the saved file's memory size? ______
10. Write your name, class, date, and assignment number in the top-right corner of the printout. Turn in with this sheet.
PART B

1. From all the pictures you've ever taken, pick a strong image with simple graphics to be your logo image. Scan it as a JPEG
2. Decide on the text you will have for your logo---probably your name
3. On a white sheet of paper, create 5 separate thumbnail sketch ideas that combine your words and image in different configurations. The entire size of your logo should not be larger than the size of a business card
4. In PhotoShop, open your picture file and perform any manipulation techniques you think are necessary (focus, color balance, cropping, etc.)
5. In the Layers control box, create a new layer named "Text"
6. Select the Type tool. Click on your picture. Use the text controls (typeface, attributes, leading, kerning, colors, etc.) to create typography that fits your personality
7. Move the text where you want it on the picture. If you don't like the text or its attributes for any reason, from the Layer control box delete the layer, create a new layer and start again.
8. Be sure and save the file as a medium-level RGB JPEG with a memory size of <50k. Name the file "logo.jpg" (without the quote marks).
9. Make a color printout. Write your name, class, date, and assignment number in the top-right corner of your thumbnail sketches.

Turn in this sheet, your "giraffe" printout, your thumbnail sketches, and your color printout in a two-pocket folder.
