Assignment 16: Print Rough Layout

PART ONE: Reproduce the four newspaper picture story layouts below on four different pages of white paper.

Reproduce the layouts as closely as possible using boxes with Xs to designate images and scribble-text for headlines, cutlines, body copy, and so on. Use a blank sheet of white paper for each layout. (It doesn't have to be the same size as the newspaper page).

PART TWO: Use the five best images from your picture story. On a sheet of blank white paper, show where your headline, body copy, cutlines, images, and any other elements (rules, quote-out, enlarged letters, subhead, etc.) will go on your page.

Remember these keys for a successful layout:

  • One, large dominant picture on the page,
  • No more than five pictures on a page,
  • All pictures should be different sizes,
  • Avoid separating pictures with text,
  • Keep white space around the edges,
  • Use separate cutlines for each picture,
  • Be careful about alignment,
  • Be consistent with column space, and
  • Be creative with typography

Although "rough" is in the title of this assignment, try to be as neat as possible. Include copies of the five pictures you have chosen. Make it clear where each picture goes in your layout.
