Assignment 1: First Shoot and Scanning
For this first assignment I mainly want to make sure that you can follow directions and that your camera is working properly. But because this is a photojournalism class, you need to get used to taking pictures of people and writing cutlines about them.
Buy a 24-exposure roll of 200ISO color negative film. Find a willing friend/family member/stranger and take all 24 pictures of her or him.
I do not want to see snapshots--pictures only of interest to you or your subject. Capture the personality of your subject. I want to be able to tell what this person thinks/feels by the images themselves.
Have your negatives processed in a "next day" photo processing center (such as in the bookstore). Pick out your favorite image. Write a brief cutline (typed) as if the picture were being published in the newspaper. Don't be cute or curt.
Digitally scan the picture and make at least a 4x5 black and white printout. If you don't know how, let me know.
In a colored folder with inside pockets, turn in your sheet with the original, the printout, and cutline on the left side and all the other 23 pictures you shot in the right pocket. If you had any problems or you have questions include a separate sheet of paper. Write your name on the outside of the folder.
