Visual Journalism Syllabi and Assignments
This section contains course materials for three syllabi that can be used within a visual journalism program. Introduction to Visual Journalism Production is designed to teach a student how to gather information with words and pictures for the new field of visual journalism. The student will learn how to complete photojournalism assignments, to produce images with still and video cameras, to write cutlines and voice-overs for their images, cutlines, to produce images, to use computer software to edit their images and sound, and to create presentations for print and online media. Photojournalism will teach students how to gather information in words and pictures, to write stories and cutlines, to produce images, and to create presentations for print and online media. More importantly, it will teach the students how to work with others to produce meaningful picture stories with words and pictures within an ethical context. Design and Production for the World Wide Web is a synthesis of information about framing and composition, typography and graphic design, and film. Students must be aware not only of the production values for existing media, but of the ways this new medium should be analyzed. This course will strengthen a student's computer expertise, expand the definition of graphic design to include World Wide Web formatting, and provide a basis for the critical examination of non-print media.
