ASFBL 2008 WORLD SERIES ----------------------- GAME 5 ------ 10/27 TORONTO BLUE JA 010 001 020 - 4 NEW YORK METS 110 010 000 - 3 Game 5 between the league's co-commissioners who had never been in an ASFBL World Series before this -- Jon Bruschke of the Mets and Leo Leckie of the Jays -- witnessed an offensively minded Mets team that took the lead and stayed ahead of the visiting Jays in the early innings at Shea Stadium. A Nate McLouth home run, David Wright triple and double and David Murphy double led to 3 early Mets runs off Jays' starter Jesse Litsch, and countered RBI by Aramis Ramirez and Jermaine Dye and an aggressive base-running Jays team. The Metropolitans and starter Roy Halladay held a 3-2 edge through 7 innings, but Game 5 MVP Jermaine Dye blasted a 2-run shot off Halladay in the top of the 8th inning -- Dye had 3 RBI for the game -- giving the visiting Jays a 4-3 lead. Jay's reliever Brandon League held the Mets in check in the 7th and 8th innings, and Frankie "K-Rod" Rodriguez struck out two Mets in the 9th en route to a Game 5 save for the Jays. League got the win, and Halladay took the loss. The Toronto Blue Jays and Leo Leckie are the 2008 ASFBL World Series champions, besting a tough New York Mets team 4-1 for the title. Four of the five games in this series were decided by one run, and the one blow-out was a late-inning affair that was a 1-1 tie through 7 innings. Congratulations to Jon Bruschke and the Mets on a great 2008 season! GAME 4 ------ 10/26 TORONTO BLUE JA 000 000 110 - 2 NEW YORK METS 000 201 000 - 3 Down 3 games to none to the Jays in the World Series, the Mets' backs were against the wall in Game 4. On this night, Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado, Nate McLouth and Arthur Rhodes responded! Santana scattered 9 Jays' hits over 8 innings enough so that only 2 runs crossed the plate, and Rhodes pitched a strong 9th to get the save. Delgado homered in 2 RBI in the bottom of the 4th, and McLouth doubled in the deciding run in the 6th. Prince Fielder homered in the 7th for the Jays, and Jermaine Dye doubled in Joe Inglett in the 8th. Zack Greinke took the loss for the visitors. Both teams were running this night as the Mets stole 3 bases and the Jays stole 2. Tomorrow's Game 5 will be the last game at Shea Stadium of the Series, and the Mets will send Roy Halladay to the mound against his former team in an effort to extend the Series. Jesse Litsch takes the mound for the Jays. GAME 3 ------ 10/25 TORONTO BLUE JA 000 100 070 - 8 NEW YORK METS 000 010 000 - 1 At Shea Stadium, Oliver Perez of the Jays and Mike Pelfrey of the Mets battled through 7 innings to a 1-1 tie. Both starters scattered a high number of hits to keep the score low (7 hits for the Mets, 9 hits for the Jays), when the game was turned over to the relievers, Scott Downs and Scott Schoenweiss. Downs was impressive in his 2-plus innings of relief, but Schoenweiss revealed the vulberability he'd shown in the NLCS against the Pirates and was tagged for 7 runs in the top of the 8th inning. Joe Inglett and Jermaine Dye went deep for the Jays, and every Jay batter except the pitcher got a hit. For the Mets, Carlos Beltran had the lone RBI and lead-off hitter David Murphy was 2-4 and tripled. Downs got the win, Schoenweiss the loss, and the Toronto Blue Jays take a 3 games to none lead in the World Series. Every game will be a survival game from here on out for the Mets. Game 4 features the aces of each team: Zack Greinke of the Jays and Johan Santana of ther Mets. Former teammates Roy Halladay and Jesse Litsch both pitched well this night, but a double by Travis Snider followed by a triple by Joe Inglett gave the Jays an early 3-0 lead, and that score remained until the top of the 8th, when the Mets loaded the bases against Litsch, but reliever Scott Downs came in to get the final 2 outs of the inning and only allowing 1 run to score. Frankie Rodriguez entered in the top of the 9th to try to save it for the Jays, but fielding errors by SS Inglett and C Rod Barajas and a wild pitch by the closer combined to allow another Metropolitan run to cross the plate before K-rod was finally able to close the door. Litsch got the win, Halladay the loss, and Rodriguez his second straight World Series save. Game 3 moves to Shea Stadium in New York, where former Mets' pitcher Oliver Perez meets up against post-season pitching star Mike Pelfrey. GAME 1 ------ 10/22 NEW YORK METS 002 101 000 - 4 TORONTO BLUE JA 002 300 000 - 5 It was a see-saw affair in the early innings, with each team scoring runs and and tying the game or taking the lead. But pitching won the day in the final 3 innings of Game 1, and the Toronto Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the World Series over the New York Mets. Brian Roberts played both sides of the ball tonight, hitting a triple to send a runner across the plate and eventually scoring himself. Roberts also made a great play in the game that kept the Mets from tying the game and sending it into extra innings. For the visitors, David Murphy hit a 2-run bomb in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Metropolitans a 2-0 lead, and David Wright and Nate McLouth continued their post-season prowess with doubles apiece. Mets' DH Ryan Church also had an RBI. Joe Inglett triples in a run for the Jays in the bottom half of the 3rd, and joined Aramis Ramirez, Prince Fielder, and Rod Barajas as the Jays' players with multiple hits. Johan Santana was off tonight in the loss, giving up 12 hits and 5 runs to the offensively minded Jays, and Zach Greinke pitched well enough to earn the win. K-Rod Frankie Rodriguez saved it for the home team. Tomorrow's game features long-time Jays' hurler Roy Halladay pitching against his old Jays team and the young arm of Jesse Litsch. There is nothing like multiple perspectives on a game, and, as such, ASFBL owner commentary and insights from Game 1 -- and all World Series games -- is encouraged and appreciated.
