By Monica Holas
safety gear

1. Make a checklist of all your safety gear and make sure you’re wearing it before you step onto your board. • Knee pads • Elbow guards • Butt pad • Wrist guards • Helmet • Shin guards 2. Protect your feet by wearing thick socks and solid boots or closed toed shoes. 3. Eat a healthy meal or snack at least an hour before riding to avoid cramping. Don’t over eat! • Bananas have are a good source of potassium which can help prevent sore or cramped muscles, so munch on those before and after you ride. 4. Always stretch before beginning any sort of physical activity. 5. Walk the run first and check for hazards including sticks and branches that face uphill, rocks or sudden drops. 6. Warm up by riding a smooth, gentle slope to get the feel of your board. 7. Stay centered on your board toe and heal and front and back. 8. If you lose control, don’t try to ditch the board. Crouch down low, grab the toeside rail with your back hand, pull it up and lean back into the turn. 9. Be aware of the location of other riders and keep a safe distance. 10. Don’t go boarding alone. You’ll have much more fun with a friend or a group and you’ll be able to look out for one another in the case of an accident.
