Welcome to History & Philosophy of American Mass Communications

Welcome to History & Philosophy of American Mass Communications.  President John F. Kennedy called history "a guide to the present."  If we are to understand where we are and where we are going, we need to understand where we came from.  This semester we will trace the development of the greatest and freest media system in the world. You will meet some very interesting characters, such as Horace Greeley, James Gordon Bennett, Nellie Bly, William Randolph Hearst, William Paley, Edward R. Murrow, and others.  We'll look at the impact of media on America's social and political fabric.  Our goal is for you to have a greater understanding of the profession you are pursuing and a greater appreciation for the United States of America.  Good luck on your journey.  I am here to help you along what may be a bumpy but enjoyable road ahead.                                                                          .
