DR. ANTHONY R. FELLOW
is chair of the Cal State Fullerton Department of Communications,
the third largest in the United States.
A specialist in American media history and politics, Fellow was named a 2007 Fulbright Scholar by the U.S.
President's Commission. He will hold the prestigious
Vercelli Chair of 20th Century Mass Communications History at the
University of Piemonte, Milan, Italy, the highest Fulbright in
Italy.
At CSUF, he has taught undergraduate courses in History
& Philosophy of American Mass Communications, Communications Law,
Principles of Communications Research, Mass Media Effects, Global
Media Systems, Writing for the Mass Media, and Reporting for the
Mass Media and graduate courses in American Media History, Politics & Media, International Communications, and Media and
Governance.
Fellow is author of
American Media History,
Copy Editors Handbook for Newspapers and News Writing in a
Multimedia World.
He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the
Annenberg School for Communications, University of Southern
California, where he was a Walter H. Annenberg Fellow.
He also holds an M.A. from California State University, Fullerton,
where he was named the Outstanding Graduate Student.
He was an adjunct professor of journalism at USC for
five years and was publisher-professor of the campus daily at Cal
State Los Angeles before coming to CSUF.
Before obtaining his doctorate, Fellow was an editor
and reporter for Thomson Newspapers, at the time one of the world's
leading newspaper publishers. He worked for the San Gabriel
Valley Tribune for 10 years. In addition to his editor
duties, Fellow headed an election team which covered the
presidencies of Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter. He has
received numerous awards for news and feature writing and newspaper
design.
In addition to his CSUF administrative duties, Fellow
is a very active member of his community. He recently won
re-election to his fifth term on the Upper San Gabriel Valley
Municipal Water District and completed his 13th year as a director
on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of
Southern California, where he now sits as first vice chair of the
board. He was previously chair of the Communications and
Legislation Committee and Ethics Subcommittee.
A leader in water politics, Fellow was appointed by
L.A. Supervisor Gloria Molina to the Water Appeals Board.
Fellow also served 7 years as an elected City
Councilman and vice mayor. He was a candidate for the state
Assembly, losing his closest race by 400 votes.
Fellow is married to Clara Potes-Fellow, a former
journalist and press secretary to Bill Clinton. She currently
is director of media for the Cal State University System and
spokesperson for CSU Chancellor Charles Reed.
